Muesli

Muesli, sometimes called musli, mueslix, muslix, or müsli, is the easiest healthy breakfast to make. Just put sprouted oats and milk in a bowl! We included this because while we enjoy making breakfast, sometimes you want a break from cooking or you're in a hurry. Instead of turning to overly processed boxed cereal, you can just as easily eat healthy by pouring sprouted oats and adding milk. Usually you'll want to add raisins or some other toppings, unless you're in a big hurry.

It feels a little silly putting ingredients and instructions here, but some people may not realize how easy it is. Really you make it just like you would cereal and you probably don't need someone to tell you how to do that, right? For that reason, we won't put amounts of oats and milk since you can just go with however much you want.

You can leave your Muesli in a jar in the refrigerator to soak overnight, but we buy oats that were already sprouted, so we don't need to soak them. In fact, we prefer fresh oats over soggy soaked ones. You can add a wide variety of additions. We usually add raisins because if you have some in your kitchen, just throwing some in is quick and adds a nice sugary taste to the oats. You can also use other dried fruits, fresh fruit and/or chopped nuts. You can also add sweeteners such as honey, syrup, sugar or spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and a pinch of clove. You can also get creative by adding non-traditional ingredients such as crushed graham crackers or chocolate chip cookies. If you get adventurous and try something we didn't mention here, let us know in the comments!

ESTIMATED TIME: Under a minute!

Directions

  1. Pour however much oats you want to eat into a bowl.
  2. Pour enough milk to cover the oats.
  3. We recommend at least adding raisins here. You can skip this step if you are in a hurry and just eat oats with milk, but since oats are unsweetened, you'll usually want to add something sweet. Other options include dried fruits, fresh fruit and/or chopped nuts. You can also add sweeteners such as honey, syrup, sugar or spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and a pinch of clove. You can also get creative by adding non-traditional ingredients such as crushed graham crackers or chocolate chip cookies.

Fast, easy, healthy and delicious.

Here are some common questions people have related to muesli:

How is muesli different from oatmeal? Oatmeal is cooked, whereas muesli is generally eaten cold. If you cooked our muesli recipe, it'd be oatmeal.

Which is the best muesli to buy? We use One Degree Organic Sprouted Rolled Oats. You can get it from that affiliate link or you can find it at stores such as Costco. These are the same oats we use both for Muesli and to cook oatmeal.

Should you soak muesli before eating? If you're using sprouted oats, that's up to your personal preference. You should feel just as ready to go about your day after eating unsoaked sprouted oats as you would soaking them. In fact, many we've talked to mention that cooked oatmeal can tend to make them feel sluggish afterwards, but they feel ready to go with cold milk and sprouted oats. We're not knocking oatmeal though, it's also very healthy and is especially satisfying on a cold morning. Keep in mind that our oats are sprouted and raw unsprouted oats might cause indigestion or constipation.
